FAQs
The Essential Question
-
The quality of our faculty is unmatched.
Our instructors are highly educated in their instruments. Nearly all of them have a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in a relevant field and extensive experience in performance and education. Rather than “strings” or “brass” instructors, our teachers each specialize in a primary instrument (or a small set) because they are experts of their craft. We work hard to recruit and maintain a faculty that is held to the highest standards. No need to take our word for it — just check the staff bios!
We’re at a prime location.
Are you tired of driving 30 minutes or more for exceptional music education? Our primary studio is settled in the Sykesville/Eldersburg area. This location was strategically chosen to serve those who lack nearby opportunities to pursue music education in Carroll County.
Start out on the right foot.
Laying your foundations with the right instructor and learning environment sets you up for success — and it means you won’t have to go back to fix your technique or hand position later on. When you work alongside an expert, you learn faster, better, and you’ll have more fun!

Snow Policy/Inclement Weather
Opus generally aligns with Carroll County Public Schools and the Carroll County Snow Emergency Plan. If CCPS activities are canceled, Opus will also cancel classes for that day. Additionally, decisions regarding cancellations will be communicated through e-mail and MyMusicStaff. If in doubt, contact your instructor.
Make-up Policy
Students receive one make-up lesson per semester, and this can be used in the case of illness, or other reasons. Please advise your instructor as soon as you can that you will not be in attendance. Additional make-ups are given solely at the discretion of the instructor and are not guaranteed. A Make-Up Week is scheduled at the end of each semester.

Our teachers are experts in their instruments and can certainly make recommendations if you don't already have an instrument or are looking to upgrade. Since some instruments come in different sizes for people of various ages, our teachers can guide you toward suitable options.
Opus has a limited selection of instruments available for loan, and we can direct you to local shops if you need to rent or purchase one.

While we strongly encourage participation in recitals, masterclasses, and workshops for the student's musical development and enjoyment, this is never required. Your instructor is always available to help you work through any barriers to performing.
Scholarship students and students in a special curriculum are an exception and may be required to participate in certain events to maintain their status.
